Tesla Robotaxi, Driverless Car

Tesla has revealed its fully autonomous taxi, which is said to feature inductive charging and start production in 2026.

  • The Tesla Robotaxi has been revealed, and it’s a driverless car with Cybertruck-like design details.
  • Tesla CEO Elon Musk said the Robotaxi (a.k.a. Cybercab) will cost under $30K, start production sometime in 2026, and have inductive (wireless) charging.
  • Tesla also revealed more details about its humanoid robot Optimus as well as the Robovan—a fully autonomous van.

Tesla has just unveiled its much-anticipated autonomous taxi, the Robotaxi, also dubbed the “Cybercab” by CEO Elon Musk. The exciting reveal took place at a private event at Warner Bros. Studios in Burbank, California.

A few years ago, Elon Musk shared his vision for the Robotaxi, promising a fleet of self-driving taxis by 2020. That timeline shifted to 2024, and Musk confirmed that the Robotaxi would be designed without a steering wheel or pedals, relying solely on Tesla’s Full Self-Driving (FSD) software. Now that we’ve seen it, it’s true—there’s no steering wheel or pedals! Instead, it features a dashboard similar to the Model 3 and Model Y, with a single screen in the center.

What’s really cool about the Robotaxi is its two-door hatchback design with just two seats, plus a spacious cargo area and no rear window. The look draws inspiration from the Cybertruck, featuring striking front and rear light bars, unique dihedral doors, and large disc-like wheel covers. Even more surprising, Musk mentioned that it doesn’t have a regular charging port; instead, it uses wireless inductive charging!

Musk didn’t reveal any details about the Robotaxi’s powertrain or range, but he did say it will start at under $30,000 and production is expected to begin in 2026—or “before 2027,” as he playfully noted. He hinted at a future where people could buy multiple Robotaxis and operate them like Uber, although he didn’t mention the “Tesla Network” specifically. Attendees at the event even got to take a ride in the Robotaxi, but with long lines, the ride was just around the Westworld film set where the reveal took place.
