In addition to pavement-ripping performance and refreshing comfort, add 717 horsepower and 25 miles of electric range to the list.
The BMW M5 has always been a favorite, blending thrilling performance with comfort for long journeys. The 2025 model shakes things up with a fresh design and exciting features.
This new M5 is bigger—4.2 inches longer, 2.7 inches wider, and 1.4 inches taller—giving it a bold presence. It also introduces a plug-in hybrid system that offers about 25 miles of electric range, making it more versatile than ever.
As the seventh generation of the M5, it’s the most powerful yet, boasting an impressive 717 horsepower and 738 pound-feet of torque. That’s a significant jump from the previous model’s 600 horsepower and even more than the 627-hp M5 CS. The 2025 M5 promises to thrill like never before!
The 2025 BMW M5 features a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 engine that produces 577 horsepower. But what really sets it apart is its electric motor, which adds another 194 horsepower and can boost torque to 332 pound-feet. This combination gives you the power of a bigger engine in a smaller package.
The car is equipped with a 14.8-kWh lithium-ion battery, allowing for about 25 miles of all-electric driving when you switch to Electric mode. In Hybrid mode, the engine and electric motor work together efficiently, adapting to your driving style—whether you choose Comfort, Sport, or Sport Plus. Comfort mode may even let the car run on electric power alone. There’s also an eControl mode that saves battery for later, which is handy in cities with restrictions on gas-powered vehicles.
The 2025 BMW M5 sends its impressive power to the road using BMW’s M xDrive all-wheel-drive system. This system has been upgraded to handle the extra torque from the hybrid setup. By default, it operates in 4WD mode, favoring rear-wheel drive, but you can switch to 4WD Sport for an even more rear-focused drive. If you turn off stability control, you can also engage 2WD mode for some serious fun on the track.
Driving through the scenic back roads of Germany, the Hybrid mode in Sport is a blast. The powertrain responds instantly, with the electric motor smoothing out any turbo lag. On the autobahn, the M5 accelerates hard, hitting 160 mph with ease, and it can reach a top speed of 190 mph with the M Driver’s package.
The eight-speed automatic transmission shifts seamlessly, making the driving experience feel flawless. However, when it comes to acceleration, the new M5 may have slightly slower zero-to-60 and quarter-mile times compared to the previous generation. But with its combination of power and agility, it still promises an exhilarating ride!
The M5’s chassis is expertly tuned for exceptional grip while keeping the ride comfortable for long trips. It features a multilink front and rear suspension with steel springs and adaptive dampers that adjust automatically for a smooth experience. The rear steering can turn the wheels slightly in sync with the front for added stability or in the opposite direction to make tight turns easier.
To enhance performance, the M5 has specific reinforcements, including bracing between the bulkhead and strut towers, extra support in the engine compartment, and bracing underneath. The car rides on Michelin Pilot Sport S5 tires, which are 10 mm wider than before, with 285/40R-20 up front and 295/35R-21 at the back. The wheels have also grown an inch wider in the front and a half inch wider in the rear, improving both grip and handling.
