In designing this striking, hovercraft-like concept, Porsche looked back at the 959, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder to get inspiration for the future.
â˘â˘Lightweight carbon-fiber design and aero elements make more downforce than a 911 GT3 RS
Summer brings out the coolest concept cars, and Porsche’s Mission X is a standout! Unveiled during the celebration of 75 years of Porsche sports cars, the Mission X offers a sneak peek into the future of racing: sleek, speedy, and electric. Exciting times ahead for car lovers!
The Porsche Mission X is a sleek electric coupe that looks a bit like a hovercraft! It features a lightweight glass roof and unique doors that open upward, reminiscent of a beetle’s wings. Porscheâs design team likely drew inspiration from the legendary 917 race car. Oliver Blume, Porsche’s chairman, says the Mission X carries on the legacy of iconic models like the 959, Carrera GT, and 918 Spyder, paving the way for the future of sports cars.
The Porsche Mission X is a compact beauty, measuring 177 inches long, 78.7 inches wide, and just 47.2 inches tallâperfect for your garage! Its wheelbase of 107.4 inches is similar to the Carrera GT and 918. Racing influences shine through in the low, elongated headlights, which use sleek LED technology. During the day, only a thin strip is visible, but when the headlights activate, the full unit opens up “like an eye blinking,” giving it a modern pop-up look.
The Porsche Mission X shines in a special color called Rocket Metallic, made just for this car. Its sleek carbon-fiber details keep it lightweight, and Porsche claims it generates more downforce than a 911 GT3 RS! The car features staggered tires, with 20-inch wheels in the front and 21-inch in the back, to maximize that downforce. Youâll also notice Porscheâs redesigned crest on the wheels, hood, and steering wheelâsmall but stylish changes!
The Porsche Mission X features a striking full-length light at the back, proudly displaying “Porsche” across itâjust in case you didnât notice the new crest! While charging, the “E” in Porsche pulses gently to indicate it’s in action. As a concept car, specific details about its power are limited, but we do know itâs an electric hypercar. The battery is placed behind the seats, helping to balance the weight and enhance its mid-engine performance.
While details about the motors are still under wraps, the Porsche Mission X boasts an impressive power-to-weight ratio of about 1 horsepower for every 2.2 pounds. It features a 900-volt system that lets it charge twice as fast as the Taycan Turbo S, which can go from 5 to 80 percent in just over 20 minutes!
Inside, the driver and passenger seats showcase different colors. The driver’s seat seamlessly blends into the Kalahari Gray dashboard, emphasizing that the driver is truly part of the car. Meanwhile, the passenger sits on Andalusia Brownâleaving us curious about what that says about their experience!
The Porsche Mission X draws from motorsport with its open-top steering wheel, featuring mode switches and shift paddles, likely for regenerative braking. It also includes lap recorders and a stopwatch, so you can track your own NĂźrburgring time. Right now, the production car record is held by the Mercedes AMG One, with a lap time of 6:35.18 set in 2022.
While Porsche calls the Mission X a design study for now, we remember how the Mission E became the Taycan, so there’s hope this exciting model could eventually hit the dealerships!
